Thanks to the impressive horsepower of the PlayStation 5, players can easily dive back in after dying a gruesome death or fast-travel to a different location. In Demon’s Souls Remake, your main place of residence and starting point is an area called Nexus. This area is a safe world and a connection point between other worlds, and ghosts and survivors stay there to travel to other parts of Boletaria through the various portals in the area.

While I was somewhat late to the PlayStation 5 party, as I only got mine back in February, I pretty much took to the Demon’s Souls remake straight away. I played the original game a great deal on the PlayStation 3, so I was fascinated to see how the remake would be handled. I even took time to stop and appreciate the fidelity of the flowing sewage in the game’s notoriously gross Valley of Defilement. This game does not suffer from any negative points in its kind, and if the only drawback of the main game was the animations and some graphics, now they have become the strength of the game. Demon’s Souls resurrects a game that could have easily become a historical footnote overshadowed by its more popular successors.

The Clever Rat’s Ring can be used to increase the weapon’s damage while the player’s HP is low. Get ready for one of the best early strength-based weapons in the game. The Crushing Battle Axe is a real damage dealer and can really help take down demons. The regular Battle Axe is dropped by the Boleteria Soldiers, but the real prize is the Battle Axe found in the Stonefang Tunnels.

It may not weigh much, but it does stop players from carrying hundreds of Moon Grass and being able to live forever. Anyone who played the original Demon’s Souls will remember the atrocious character creator. No matter what players did, characters in the original turned out less than desirable. Go down the little staircase and turn right to obtain an Unknown Warrior Soul. In that room, you will find a lever, pull it and this will open the giant door you found at the beginning of the game.

Specifically, you need to defeat here while she is still in her human form, which can be done when the World Tendency is Pure White. This medium armor set can be worn by any character type, and changes its appearance slightly depending on your character’s build. A truly unique armor set in Demon’s Souls, the Binded Cross armor set looks a bit rough, but certainly comes with a specific vibe, as well as some protection from various types of damage.

The spectacle of seeing this massive creature, while dramatic in the original game, is now astounding. The Demon’s Souls remake’s visual fidelity, its immersive sound effects and score, and the haptic feedback from the DualSense controller together convey the scale of a giant beast tearing through the atmosphere above me. And when I bring down my sword on this demon, I feel the thundercrack reverberate through my hands and my ears as the screen shakes violently. It is worth remembering, however, that the soul of the boss alone is not enough to create weapons. You simply transform a certain type of weapon using the boss’s soul.

Keep going through the stairs, you will eventually find a Dregling equipped with a flaming sword. Now turn around, to see another Boletaria Soldier on the top of the short stairs. On your right, there is a closed door and on your left a small staircase. You will find a Boletaria Soldier over a wood structure wielding a crossbow, and two more Dreglings on the ground. Beware of the gap on the floor, because falling there will automatically kill you. On your left there is a locked door that will only open if you achieve Pure White or Pure Black World Tendency.

Or you can walk up to the long set of stairs, wait for the soldier to push the boulder, and immediately run down or jump down to avoid getting hit. The boulder will destroy the wooden barricade that’s blocking the section where the body holds the sword. Personally, I’ve always been a framerate over fidelity guy, so I played the whole thing in performance mode and never looked back. That said, cinematic mode is definitely a stunner if you don’t mind sacrificing half the frames. There’s still an annoyingly common tendency to use a shove attack when I don’t mean to, and I wish the developers had done something to better explain World Tendency to newcomers. But those nitpicks notwithstanding, Bluepoint did an excellent job of updating Demon’s Souls to modern standards without changing the core of its gameplay.

With all that in mind, it’s wonderful that Bluepoint Games mostly ignored all of the newer Souls games and thoroughly nailed this remake of Demon’s Souls. Showing that From Software has to finally pull its socks up and make something new for a change.
